Internet Marketing Strategy – Buying & Selling Domain Names

by Diane Corriette on February 13, 2012

Today’s internet marketing strategy is all about buying and selling domain names. Did you know that every year thousands of people and business owners forget to renew their domain name and some people decide that they just don’t want it anymore. When I gave up on women internet marketers I didn’t bother renewing the .com domain and now it is for sale for over $700!!!

If you can find relevant keyword rich domain names and buy them cheaply you should be able to make a great living selling them.

I don’t do this for a living but I have sold a few of my own domain names and I have two that I hope to sell very soon (just awaiting confirmation) one for $600 and the other for $850. One that I have sold and used to own is www.listbuildingforbloggers.com – that was my first experience of selling a domain when Phil Hollows got in touch and asked me if I would sell it to him. It was great to receive a large sum of money and all I did was buy a domain a couple of years ago that I never got round to using in a big way!

This is a great internet marketing strategy for someone who works full time but wants a way to earn some extra income or for a mother with young children who can’t spend time on writing blog posts and wants something easy to manage.

Years ago before the dot com bubble burst you could buy a domain and sell it to a website developer for high six figure sums and even though that opportunity has long gone there are still ways to earn a living buying and selling domain names. Here’s how…

You can do one of four things

1. Buy and sell a domain name for profit

2. Buy a domain name, start a blog on it with adsense, sell it once it is making money (or keep it and enjoy the income)

3.  Buy an expired domain name and use it to bring visitors and traffic to your site

4. A combination of all three!

The first one is obviously quicker because there is nothing to do except find them and sell them while the second may take longer but could help you make more money if you find the right keyword rich domain name.

Blog Success teaches its members how to make money blogging by buying expired domain names and setting up 10 blogs that make $30 a day each.  You need to give yourself time to build one before moving on to the other but this is a great internet marketing strategy for the person who is patient enough, especially when you realize you can sell your blog or website for money.

The third one will bring visitors to your domain name and as long as you find a relevant expired domain you can use those visitors to increase your adsense earnings. For example I might search for expired domain names relating to internet marketing and ‘Park’ them here so when visitors arrive they see this blog.

First you need to find the right domains and you will need someone to show you how to do that to ensure you get valuable domains that will be worth something rather than domains than you might end up keeping for years and never selling.

The links above will take you to relevant places where you can learn how to buy and sell domain names. I don’t know a particular internet marketing expert that focuses on just this area but through my own experience of having sold domains and making an effort to sell some of the domains I own I appreciate just how lucrative it can become.

Do you have any experience of buying and selling domain names? Or do you know an internet marketer who is an expert in this field?

I have a friend who sells domains but he’s not really an expert. He has been doing it for about six months and is still learning but he is already making some money. He sold his first domain and wouldn’t say how much profit he made but said it was more than $450 and under $800 – he paid $9 for the domain! Not bad going for someone who six months ago was only looking into it.

That’s an excellent result for him. I think if you focus on just one thing without distraction you can make things happen faster. Do you know if he was taught by anyone? What learning did he do?

I asked him and he mentioned a site called http://www.domaingraduate.com – he also used one you recommended above the domain name club for regular support.

This one would suit me I think. I don’t like all the work that goes into blogs and writing but buying and selling domains I could probably do :)

When buying a domain name is it better to go for the number of links or the age of the domain as the best factor to buy?

Depends on if you can checkout where the links are from. A bunch of links from sites that are low level might not be worth it when compared to age. You can always build links but you can’t ever change the age of a domain so if I had the choice between buying a domain that was 5 years old and one that was a year old with links I would go for the older one. The search engine respects age.

Thanks for the question Mandy
